I sat in on the Transferable Learning Session at #LTC2012 where we heard about three practical Tookits. These all seemed very well researched and widely applicable across the sector and I’d recommend a look.

1. Excellence Tool for HoDs, Durham
Looking into soft skills and their impact on high performing departments
An impressive scale of underpinning research has allowed Durham to create a tool to identify the nine key behaviour and trait ‘enablers’ having an influence on well performing departments.
These are Change Management, Communication, Research and Teaching Direction, Strategy and Shared Values, Leadership, Departmental Dynamics and Culture, Rewards and Staffing.
The Toolkit includes a 15 minute questionnaire producing a diagnostic benchmark and highlighting areas for improvement. Deployment models are by single user (HoD) or multiple users as a departmental exercise.

3. A framework for the evaluation of academic and support staff learning and development in HE
An ongoing project developing a toolkit to address these issues. Principally this is to identify what works best to address learning development of the workforce and demonstrate the Value and Impact of Staff Development Services.
